The Director General of Energy Commission of Nigeria, Professor Abubakar Sanusi  S. Sambo has inaugurated a committee to finalise the Clean Energy Bill.

The Clean Energy Bill seeks to create a legislative framework to promote the rapid expansion of renewable energy use and improve energy efficiency in Nigeria. When passed into law, the Bill will enhance access to energy services, improved energy security, increase the diversity of energy sources, sustainable development and address climate change. Members of the Clean Energy Committee were drawn from the Energy Commission of Nigeria, UNDP, the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Federal Ministry of Power, other agencies of government, representatives of the renewable energy industries, NGOs, Research Centers etc.

In his address, Professor Sambo charged the Committee to come up with a Clean Energy Bill that opens the market for private sectors investors in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Mr Ewah Eleri, a member of the inaugurated committee said that “…our economy struggles today because we have not been able to address our energy needs, while we only utilize a fraction of our potentials for hydro electricity.

The committee will work in partnership with the National Assembly to ensure a swift passage of the Bill into law.
